Sensory Water Bag

Just in case you didn’t know, Pinterest is an addictive creative site for anyone! A while back I found this idea for a sensory water bag. I showed it to Melanie’s speech therapist last week and she said let’s do it!

During Melanie’s therapy session today with her speech and occupational therapist, we put together the sensory water bag! You will need:

  • thick, clear plastic tarp (like painters tarp)
  • duct tape
  • water
  • food coloring

Autism and Severe Weather; Not a good mix

Be prepared for severe weather!

Today in Indiana, it’s going to be a very stormy day. I already woke up to a little thunderstorm this morning in our area. Of course Michaela was awake and nervous with it raining outside. Which means Michaela is going to be keyed up and on edge for the rest of the day.

When Michaela was little storms never bothered her. She would sleep right through them at night. Soon as Michaela turned 3 years old it all changed. She would mostly be afraid of the rain especially when it would hit the windows. Michaela would be in a complete panic mode. We would have to leave her door open, with lights on to help her feel safe and secure. Melanie at this point could careless and is not as affected by a raging storm. (more…)

What’s Happening?

A lot has been going on this year with the girls! First, we all have recovered from the holiday excitement. Michaela was able to go back to school for a “whole” week and I know she was thrilled. She even had some homework this week. Michaela loves to do her homework and she is very meticulous about it get it done. Michaela gets very upset when she doesn’t have homework to do. I hope Michaela will be this excited about homework when she gets older! (more…)

Was it a “Trick” or a “Treat” this year for Halloween?

In the beginning of October all the TV shows start talking about Halloween and then we started to see the Halloween commercials. The past several years Michaela wasn’t to sure about the whole Halloween thing. Sometimes it was hard to get a costume on Michaela because it was different and not part of the routine.  Plus, when we would walk around the neighborhood Michaela didn’t understand the concept of getting treats from a complete strangers. To Michaela it was just a day we would walk around door to door and then life went on. (more…)

Sorry, Chris and I haven’t been blogging much because we are in Nashville, TN for the Disciples of Christ General Assembly which is in FULL swing!!! Chis is extremely busy working and I have been helping with the registration booth. Where are the girls you might ask?
