Poem; “The Misunderstood Child”

The Misunderstood Child
by Kathy Winters

… I am the child that looks healthy and fine.
I was born with ten fingers and toes.
But something is different, somewhere in my mind,
And what it is, nobody knows.

I am the child that struggles in school,
Though they say that I’m perfectly smart.
They tell me I’m lazy — can learn if I try —
But I don’t seem to know where to start. (more…)

 Update on Melanie:

Melanie

Melanie

First, I can’t believe Melanie will be 2 years old in October! Just plain crazy!! She still has speech and occupational therapy once a week through First Steps. Typically, occupational therapy is Tuesday mornings and speech therapy is Wednesday afternoons. Melanie is doing very well with occupational therapy and the last several sessions have been really good. Melanie likes to bounce on the therapy ball since it gives her a lot of sensory input which is what her body needs to help process certain simulations. Melanie has been allowing the therapist touch her hands and guiding her hands to do a certain activities (which is good) because when she first started therapy Melanie wouldn’t let the therapist touch her. Melanie also has been doing a lot more purposeful play with the toys by not sifting and hoarding the toys as much. (more…)

Michaela and Kelli resting for the night after the visitors leave

Yep, it is Michaela’s 5th Birthday today! She was born on June 13th at 6:30pm 7 lbs 13 oz and 20 1/2 inches at Community South Hospital in Indianapolis. I gave labor a try but I was not progressing at all. My blood pressure kept going up and Michaela’s heart rate would drop during the contractions so we ended up with a C-section. (more…)

To “Go” or not to “Go?” That is the question…

This is a question I ask myself a lot when I take the girls out. Really it is every parents question when they take their own children out from the safety and comfort of home. In your mind you weigh out the options; at least in my case I do.

I am finding out that I am a planner. I have to be with Michaela and Melanie. In my mind, I visualize where we are going and try to picture how I vision the activity is going to be. This way I can plan on what to tell Michaela and prepare her on what to expect. I also try to figure out if there are going to be any issues and I can mentally prepare myself to deal with. For example if we need to leave quickly for some reason. I make sure I have the stroller with me to put Melanie in. Then if necessary to pick Michaela up and walk out. I always make sure when we go out I know where all the quick exits are and definitely know where the bathrooms are. 🙂 I do not like it when things are not planned out and sprung on me plus I hate surprises. I guess you can say this is one of my pet peeves! (more…)
