Yep, April is almost here and that means…AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH!

This month is going to be extremely busy for us!

As everyone knows ūüėČ April 1st is when Chris and I launched “Life’s Little Puzzle” a year ago! It has been one heck of a year and I am so thankful to have this blog. I never considered myself a writer but writing has helped me so much with this journey with the girls. I believe it is the best therapy for myself in being able to write down my thoughts on what it is like to raise¬†children¬†with autism. I want to say, THANK YOU so much for allowing Chris and I to write down our¬†triumphs¬†and fears. While you are able to read to understand and accept what it is like to have children with autism!

April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day! Autism Speaks has a world wide¬†campaign, “Light It Up Blue” to help spread autism awareness.¬†¬†Here are some ideas to show your support for autism:

  • Ask everyone you know to wear BLUE on Monday; from work, church, school, friends, family, and online friends.
  • Change your outside light bulbs BLUE; go to Home Depot, if you have one, to get blue outside lights. Home Depot will donate $1 for every purchase to Autism Speaks to help fund autism research and spread autism awareness.
  • Change your Facebook/Twitter¬†profile picture BLUE or your personal blog BLUE.
  • Consider getting an autism awareness license plate. Check with your state license branch under “specialty plates” to see if this is offered.

On April 14th, I have a unique opportunity to talk about “Special Needs Families and Faith” at the “Courage for the Journey”¬†2012 Women’s Spring Events. I am part of the Indiana Region Disciples Women’s Commission which coordinates the yearly women’s spring events. One of the afternoon paths is going to be “Special Needs Families and Faith.” I contacted the Autism Society of Indiana¬†¬†to see if they would be able to help me with the presentation. I made contact with the Lead Ally and she was very excited to help!! ¬†We have been working on our presentation this month. I can’t wait for the event to share with everyone!

Finally¬†April 28th,¬†Chris and I decided to¬†organised Team Life’s Little Puzzle to¬† join “Walk Now for Autism Speaks” on honor of Michaela and Melanie. We are very excited to be raising money that will go towards autism research and help spread autism awareness. We are¬†extremely¬†proud of our girls and we want to show our support. We are still looking for walkers to join us. The walk is just a mile around Garfield Park on the sidewalks. If you are interested please sign up to walk with us!

While signing up to be walker, you will be asked, ” if you are wanting to raise money?” I just wanted to stress, you do not have to raise money to join the walk. The¬†organizers¬†of the walk are just wanting a head count to see how many people are walking that day. Also parents are encouraged to register their children. Again the children also do not need to raise money just enjoy the walk around the park!

If you are unable to walk with us and would like to sponsor a walker you are MORE than welcomed to do so! Chris and I have set a goal to raise $500 for the walk! It will be interesting to see the girls reaction at the walk with a lot of people around. We will make sure to have plenty of pictures!

How are you going to show your support for Autism Awareness Month?? ūüôā
